😫 Let’s Be Real: A Guilt-Free Guide to Finally Washing Your Makeup Brushes

Okay, let's talk about the chore we all hate: cleaning those makeup brushes. You know you should your skin is probably yelling at you about it but finding the time (and the motivation) is the absolute worst.

I'm here to tell you that those dirty brushes are genuinely ruining your blending and, yes, they are the number one silent reason you might be breaking out. They’re just sitting there, turning into little bacteria sponges full of old oil and dead skin. Gross, right?

At Toozday, we promise this doesn't have to be a multi-hour commitment. This is the simple, non-judgemental guide to washing your brushes quickly, without ruining them!

🔪 What You Need (Spoiler: You Don’t Need Expensive Soap)

Don't buy a $20 brush cleanser. We have better things to spend our money on.

  • For the Nasty Stuff (Foundation, Concealer, Creams): Since these brushes handle oil and grease, they need a fighter. Grab a little bit of Gentle Dish Soap or, even better, Baby Shampoo. Dish soap cuts through the gunk quickly, and baby shampoo is gentle enough not to dry out the fibers.
    • Pro Tip for Caked-Up Brushes: If your foundation brush is rock-solid, put a drop of Olive Oil and a drop of soap in your palm. The oil helps melt the caked-on foundation before the soap even has to work.
  • For the Fluffies (Powder, Blush, Eyeshadow): These natural-hair brushes are more delicate. They respond well to Gentle Shampoo, and you can even run a tiny bit of hair Conditioner through them afterward to keep them super soft for blending.

🚿 The Only Way to Wash Brushes Without Ruining Them

This is where people mess up and melt the glue. Pay close attention to the water angle!

  1. Water Temp Matters: Turn the water on lukewarm—never hot! Hot water is the enemy. It melts the glue (the bond that holds the bristles into the metal part, called the ferrule) and your brushes will start shedding like crazy.
  2. Rinse Downwards Only! This is the most crucial rule. Hold the brush head pointing down toward the sink. Rinse the bristles, but never let the water run up into that metal ferrule. If water gets in there, the glue dissolves, and eventually, the handle will detach or mold will grow.
  3. Lather and Swirl (Gently): Put a little soap in your palm. Swirl the wet bristles gently until you see the makeup color foam up. Don't press hard; you only want to clean the top part of the hair.
  4. Rinse Again: Keep the brush pointing down and rinse until the water coming off the bristles is completely clear. Squeeze the excess water out. If you see even a tiny bit of color, you need to go back and lather again!
  5. Reshape: Squeeze the last bit of water out and use your fingers to reshape the brush head back into its original dome or angle before setting it down.

🌬️ The Secret to Fast Drying (Stop Drying Them in a Mug!)

If you dry your brushes handle-down in a mug, you’re letting water pool right back into the glue, which is the worst thing you can do.

  • Lay Them Flat, Hanging Off the Edge: Lay your clean brushes flat on a towel. The best position is near the edge of a counter or table so the brush head is hanging slightly over the edge. This simple trick allows air to circulate all around the bristles, letting them dry faster and preventing that gross mildew smell.
  • Give It Time: Put the hairdryer away! You need to let them air dry completely. Dense foundation brushes can take $8$ to $12$ hours, so plan this for a Friday night or a lazy Sunday.

📅 When Do I Actually Have to Wash Them?

Stop guessing. Here’s a basic schedule to keep your skin happy:

Brush Type

How Often to Wash

Why We Can't Skip It

Foundation, Concealer, Cream Products

Once per week

They soak up oil and bacteria from your face all week long. This is the top cause of acne.

Eyeshadow, Powder, Blush

Every 1–2 weeks

They use dry powders, which harbor less bacteria, but color builds up, making your favorite blush look muddy.

Eyeliner, Lip Brushes

After every single use

These work with high concentrations of pigment and touch sensitive areas. Clean them immediately!
